What ClientCounsel is, who it is for, and how a client and their counsel work a matter together.
What is ClientCounsel?
ClientCounsel AI is a litigation workspace shared by a client and their counsel. Aila, its AI legal agent, helps organize the file, draft court documents, build the chronology, assemble the record and verify authorities, while a client and their lawyer work the same matter together. It is in private beta.
Can ClientCounsel help a self-represented or pro se litigant?
Yes. Self-represented litigants (SRLs) are a core audience. They are called pro se litigants in the United States and litigants in person in England and Wales. A litigant works their own matter with Aila: organizing the file, drafting the appropriate court forms, building the chronology, and preparing the record step by step, with the option to bring in counsel. ClientCounsel does not provide legal advice and is not a law firm.
Can ClientCounsel help with a small claims case?
Yes. Small claims is where many people first meet the court system without a lawyer, and it is where the private beta starts: organizing the claim or reply, the documents and the dates, and preparing for the hearing. Larger civil matters run in the same workspace.
How is ClientCounsel different from a general AI chatbot like ChatGPT for legal help?
A general chatbot generates an answer from open-web training data and can invent citations. ClientCounsel is designed to answer only from retrieved, cited sources drawn from the applicable court rules and the matter's own record, and to label each answer by confidence — an architecture intended to keep answers grounded in the record rather than assembled from scratch.
Who is ClientCounsel for?
Self-represented and pro se litigants; lawyers and law firms working unbundled (limited-scope) or full-retainer matters; and, on a planned lane, public defenders and legal aid teams. Client and counsel share one workspace on the same matter.
What types of matters and documents does ClientCounsel handle?
Civil, appeal, family, and tribunal matters. It drafts court forms such as claims and responses, notices of application, affidavits, and petitions from the matter, assembles the record and book of authorities, verifies citations, and prepares for hearings.
What are unbundled legal services?
Unbundled legal services mean hiring a lawyer for one defined part of a case, such as reviewing an affidavit or appearing at one hearing, instead of the whole matter. In the United States this is usually called limited-scope representation; in Canada, a limited scope retainer. CounselXE, the ClientCounsel marketplace for unbundled legal services, sends counsel a scoped task with the matter already organized.
Can I ask my lawyer to use ClientCounsel for my case?
Yes. ClientCounsel is designed as the shared workflow between a client and their lawyer. A client can bring it to counsel they are hiring, or to a lawyer they already have, and ask to run the matter on it together — unbundled (limited-scope) or on full retainer. The lawyer stays in control and reviews before filing, while the platform does the document-heavy groundwork.
How can I find a lawyer who works with AI, or work on my case with my lawyer using AI?
ClientCounsel gives a client and their lawyer one shared workspace on the same matter, so the two can work on the case together with Aila doing the organizing, drafting, and record assembly. A client whose lawyer has not adopted it can ask them to use ClientCounsel for the matter. For one defined task, CounselXE connects the matter with unbundled counsel.
Where is ClientCounsel available?
ClientCounsel AI is in private beta, starting in British Columbia, Canada. Court rules and forms load per jurisdiction, so the platform is designed to extend to other Canadian provinces, to US states, and to other common-law courts.
Is ClientCounsel a law firm or does it give legal advice?
No. ClientCounsel does not provide legal advice and is not a law firm. It is not affiliated with any court or tribunal and is not a government service. It is a workflow platform; where legal advice is needed, counsel can be brought into the matter.
